Athlete Portal – how athletes share information with commentators
Definitions used on this page
- Athlete Portal is the athlete-facing part of LiveCast: an app and website where athletes create and manage their card.
- Athlete card is the athlete's own profile for commentators: name, sport, country, club, photo, how to say their name, and the answers they choose to give.
- Update is a short message an athlete shares with commentators, shown for seven days.
- Invitation code is the only way in. It comes from someone already inside: a teammate, a coach or a team, or LiveCast.
- Support staff are coaches, physios, team leaders and others who join with a staff code.
The problem it solves
Commentators prepare for many athletes they have never met. For lesser-known athletes, the information available is often a results line, and the name is easy to get wrong. The athlete, meanwhile, has no direct way to tell the people describing them on air what matters.
Athlete Portal closes that gap. The athlete writes it once, and it reaches commentators preparing a broadcast where that athlete takes part.
How an athlete joins
- Get a code. Athlete Portal is by invitation only. A code comes from a teammate, a coach or a team, or from us. The code decides the role, athlete or support staff, and the person using it cannot pick the role.
- Enter the code in the app. A code works for 30 days, for as many people as the sender chooses. Athletes can create codes for other athletes; support staff can create codes for athletes and staff.
- Confirm age. Athlete Portal is for people aged 16 and over. The date of birth is used for that check and to tell people with the same name apart. It is never shown to commentators.
- Create the card. Tapping "Create my card" is the athlete's consent. Only what the athlete fills in is stored, and empty answers are never shown.
There are no passwords. The app keeps the athlete signed in. On a new phone, the athlete taps "I've been here before" and gets a six-digit one-time code by email.
If a card already exists. If someone joins with a new code and their name and date of birth match an existing card, they are offered a way back to it instead of getting a duplicate. If that does not work, they get a new card, and our team checks whether the two should be merged. A valid code always gets the athlete in.
More detail for athletes is on Athlete Portal for athletes.
What the athlete can share
- How to say their name. For an international commentator, this is often the single most useful line on the card.
- Their story: who they are, what drives them, life outside sport.
- A photo.
- Updates: short messages before a competition, for example about form, a comeback or a milestone they would like mentioned. Each update is shown to commentators for seven days, or until the athlete removes it.
What commentators see, and what they don't
Commentators using LiveCast Studio can see the card: name, sport, country, club, photo, how to say the name, and the answers. They see it, for example, when they prepare a broadcast the athlete takes part in, together with updates from the last seven days.
Commentators never see the athlete's email address or date of birth. The email address is used only for signing in. The card is not published on any open web page, and it is not sold or used for advertising.
In the commentator's preparation, information from the athlete is labelled as coming from the athlete, separate from official data and from the commentator's own notes. A commentator always knows who said what.
Who controls the card
The athlete. They can change the card or remove anything at any time, and delete the card, or the card and their sign-in, from the app's settings or on the web. Deletion is immediate and permanent; neither the athlete nor LiveCast can undo it. Support staff who share a team with the athlete see what commentators see, and cannot change the card.
The data controller is LivecastGroup AS (org. no. 837655692, Norway), under the GDPR. More about how the data is handled is on your data, and the full rules are in the Athlete Portal privacy policy.
For coaches and teams
Coaches, team leaders and other support staff join with a staff code and can invite their athletes with a code of their own. Support staff can also put people who are already in Athlete Portal into a group, for example a national team. How this works for staff is described on Athlete Portal for team staff.
How LiveCast does it
On the commentator's side, the athlete's card appears in the prep view for a broadcast the athlete takes part in, marked as shared by the athlete. It sits next to the official data and the commentator's own notes, so preparation stays in one place and every line has a clear origin. The Athlete Portal page explains the app for athletes and staff.
FAQ
What is Athlete Portal?
An invitation-only app and website where athletes tell commentators what they want known: how to say their name, their story and short updates before a competition. Commentators using LiveCast Studio see it when they prepare a broadcast with that athlete.
Is the athlete's card public?
No. It is not shown on any open web page. Commentators using LiveCast Studio can see it, and support staff on the same team see the same as commentators. Email address and date of birth are never shown to them.
How do athletes get access?
With an invitation code from a teammate, coach, team or LiveCast. A code works for 30 days and for as many people as the sender likes. Athletes must be 16 or older.
How does an athlete sign in on a new phone?
There is no password. The athlete taps "I've been here before", types the email address they joined with, and gets a six-digit one-time code by email.
Can an athlete delete their information?
Yes, at any time, from the app's settings or on the web. Deletion is immediate and permanent. If the card was based on official results, the official data stays, without anything the athlete added.
